Learn How to Adapt Quickly!

Dear Leader,

How is your adaptability? Do you resist change, or are you willing to roll with the punches?

Adaptability skills are skill sets that encompass a person's ability to adjust to changes in their environment. In a work environment, you may have to change your course abruptly to satisfy a client's needs. In a relationship setting, you may have to change your plans to accommodate a partner’s needs.

The more adaptable you are, the more types of other personalities you are likely to connect with and the more environments you will thrive in. Additionally, highly adaptable people can remain calm in surprising situations.

Adaptability helps us be more open and willing to learn new things and take on challenges.

Being adaptable and open to change may not always be easy; however, learning this essential skill will go a long way in your personal development.

Here are 5 steps to help you improve your adaptability skills.

First, you need to be aware of changes in your environment.

Next, it’s important to develop a growth mindset. Developing a growth mindset can positively influence your ability to take on new challenges, find new opportunities to build your knowledge, and contribute to new projects.

Another method that can help you develop your adaptability skills might be to set goals for yourself. Identify your weaknesses and set a goal to work on them.

Ask for feedback from peers, coworkers, and loved ones. Welcome both positive and negative feedback to help you grow.

Finally, learn to acknowledge and accept change.

Personal Development forYour Business

Dear Leader,

As a leader, it should be at the top of your list to strive for continuous personal improvement. Why? Because leading a team of people is a dynamic and ever-evolving challenge.

As humans, we aren’t perfect - far from it. Leading a team of imperfect humans is even more difficult. In order to rise to the occasion time after time and stay at the top of your game, you must strive to stay curious and learn from each experience you have, because your growth is directly correlated to the company’s growth.

While sometimes opportunities for personal growth will appear on their own, sometimes that growth requires you to go a little out of your way. One of the best ways to ensure personal growth is to work on your desire to constantly learn as much as possible. Get in the habit of asking questions and challenge your perceptions by listening to the viewpoints of others.

Start questioning yourself - in a healthy way. Instead of spiraling into self-doubt, consider the motivations behind your actions, and try to dig deeper behind the reasons that you choose to do what you do. In other words, spend some time self-analyzing, just not in a negative way.

Work on your communication skills. As a leader, you’ll have to be a fantastic communicator. You need to be able to tell people when they’re doing something wrong and praise them when they’re doing well. You should also be striving to make your ideas and thoughts clear to those around you because they’re worth sharing!

What area of personal growth is most difficult for you? Is there something that you think you need to work on?

As a leader, it’s easy to feel as though you need to put on a tough persona, but one of the best ways to keep your team motivated is to try a little tenderness once in a while. By this, I mean being open with your team about how much you appreciate the work they do for you.

How does this relate to personal growth? Often, we forget to show our appreciation for those around us, but there’s nothing worse than feeling as though you're being taken for granted. Don’t leave your team feeling unappreciated, push yourself to say thank you. Humbling yourself - especially as a leader - to the point where you’re expressing gratitude for your team members can be challenging, although of course, it shouldn’t be.

Practice saying thank you more, and go out of your way to compliment the work that’s being done.

I’m so happy that you care about becoming a better leader - because I do too! I always have a ton of events for people just like you, from webinars to physical classes and fun get-togethers. Contact me today to learn more about leadership, DISC, plus personal growth and development for you and your team!

The Secret to Being the Best Leader - (from Dane's Monthly Leadership Newsletter - #7)

Dear Leader,

You’ve heard of office politics and might think of them as a negative element in the workplace. Savvy leaders, however, view these politics as a neutral and necessary part of life and know how to strategically navigate within that hierarchy to organize and advance goals.

Think of every person in your office as an individual puzzle piece that contributes to the whole in a unique and helpful way. Getting to know the strengths of each person will help you better understand where to turn when you need help getting a difficult message through to your team, or if you’re looking to make a change. When you know the personalities you’re working with, you’ll be better able to guide the team in the right direction.

It may sound silly, but there are lots of personality tests out there that are helpful ESPECIALLY for the workplace. One of the best ones is the DISC test. The test was created as an introspective self-report questionnaire with the purpose of indicating differing dominant psychological preferences in how people perceive the world around them and make decisions. In the workplace, the test can be used to better understand learning styles, principles, and personality types, which is super helpful for you when it comes to understanding how each person meshes with one another within your company’s culture.

You can learn more and access the DISC test at https://www.lmdc.us/discThen you can schedule some time and set aside an afternoon with your team to take the test then talk about their results. If possible, do some exercises separating the introverts from extroverts, then allowing each side to ask each other questions and share viewpoints. Continue this practice with each letter of the DISC test. Not only will this allow your team to get to better understand one another, but you’ll also get an idea of how your team thinks and prefers to operate.

You can contact me and schedule me to help you with the DISC tests, and even DISC debriefs for each of your team members.  You can schedule me to come and teach/coach at https://bookme.name/CoachDane.  We could even play the Maxwell Leadership Game with your team!
